I think that they are a great way to spend time when there is nothing else, it could be better than watching tv since some games actually require you to use your brain, but i also believe that anything that involves self improvement or also if you have something to gain than it is certainly not a waist of time, like the gentleman that mentioned getting money for playing something he loves. I didn't however agree with the other person that said that anything can also be a waste of time, reading can make your brain work, writing as well, drawing, even sports can help you interact with people, the body and the mind and more. There are a lot of things to do, but we have just lost track of some activities because of all the technology, i can go on and on but by now you probably already see my point. Have a nice day,

Well, I have made $4,000 in my free time off of Halo 3 so it was great getting paid to do what I love... also I am a natural driver which I credit video games for... but other than those two, it was an awesome waste of time.
As for working out, I'm taking an intensive swimming class in college (last year in high school I took weight lifting) so I can balance stuff out. Though I've never needed to study - I just do my best to pay full attention in class because it saves countless hours later that I can waste :D

But really if you think about it, what to do instead? Watch tv? Go out? Internet? Everything is a waste of time :P
References :
Games that are entertaining and more importantly can be PAUSED are cool by me (any console game really). MMORPGs on the other hand require you to spend hours developing a character which includes long travel times or alot of practice to compete successfully in PvP (WOW, City of Heroes/Villains). Not to mention that MMORPGs are as addictive as any drug I know of. Hey, you don't have to believe me. But if you do some digging you will see alot of articles about how MMORPGs ruined lives and relationships. So stick with console games and pause those suckers a few times a day and go visit your friends. If you don't remember what those are stop in at your local museum. I think there are some there on display.
References :
Some people can burn time like that. This all depends in how was one was brought up. Me, I would rather be outside digging in the dirt, planting things like flowers and trees etc. Writing letters and notes which has become a novelty in these days of hi-tech - is a new hobby for me. People say they love getting notes and surprises in the mail. The way I look at it, video games is something people can escape to when they do not have anything else to do.
References :
They could benefit you mentally with reactions, focusing, puzzle solving, making you immune to gore figures.

But then again you could benefit allot more from everything else in life.

To the extent that these factors have been added to the players personality and this person is playing it just for fun and high scores then most of it can be a waste of time.

Though people with emotional issues can use games to get rid of anger and help them focus raver than being annoyed and grotty and not getting the best of life around them.
References :
definately a waste of time but i love them nonetheless. i think video games enrapture your imagination to a point that's not possible in anything else. using your own creativity outlets can become stressful because it's not something that can always happen on cue. video games bring imagination to life instantly.
